Parents: Be Aware

Technology has certainly changed the way today’s youth communicate.  Instead of the quarter (or dime) our parents gave us to call home and let them know where we were,  the youth of today reach into their pocket take out their cell phone and either call or text where they are.  Better yet when kids don’t call home parents can call them and find out where they are.

Unfortunately though, many young people are using their phones for purposes other than communicating with friends and family, and some can get themselves into serious trouble.  Sexting has become a new trend amongst young people.  Kids believe they are just fooling around by sending lewd texts or pictures to friends and acquaintances not realizing that someone can take that picture download it onto the internet on sites such as My Space or Facebook, and then anyone has access to it including pedophiles.  What many kids also don’t realize is that sexting is illegal!  It is a felony for children under 18 to not only receive messages and pictures like this on their phones, but taking a photo and sending  it could lead to pornography production and distribution charges. What Parents should know about sexting

Parents need to pay close attention to what their children are doing with their cell phones and what is on them.  It is not an invasion of privacy to be a proactive parent.  Your children may not like you questioning them, but it beats having them end up on a sex offenders list.
